Great weekend for the 99 Mustangs, champions of the 15th Annual Carolina Cup. The Mustangs went undefeated in the tournament scoring 16 goals and only conceding 1 goal. The Mustangs played well in all aspects of the game playing excellent team soccer on both sides of the ball. They had 6 different players’ score, with 7 different players having assist. The tone of the weekend was set by the play of the defense, goal keepers Michael Perry and Curtis McNeill were both solid in only allowing one goal in 210 minutes of soccer. The back line of John Bracewell, Zach Fugate, Will Guttry, Thomas Koty, and TJ Simmons provided the Mustangs with excellent defense that kept their opponents away from the Mustang goal. The middle of the pitch was owned by David Crotts, Travis Disher, and Nick Thurman; they provided support for the defense as well as getting up on the Mustang attack. The outside midfield and winger play of Blake Drown, Jared Ferrence, Jordy Gutierrez, and Ben Moyd, were instrumental in the Mustang’s championship by supporting the defense and attacking the flanks and spreading out the opponents of the Mustangs, this group also contributed by each scoring at least one goal in the tournament. The midfield group of wingers and central midfields were also credited with assisting on half of the Mustangs goals. The strikers Luis Gutierrez and Chris Reyes provided the offense punch with Luis scoring 5 goals over the weekend and Chris having 4 goals over the weekend. Both players also scored a hat trick, Luis in game 1 and Chris in game 2. Great weekend for the 99 Mustangs!
